You should keep in mind that the packaging of items you buy is an important part of reducing excess waste. Today is an age where everyone seems to have less time and you're lucky just to get to the grocery store so you can prepare meals at home. We certainly don't have the time to think about the packaging of the items leftover. The good news is that we can choose packages with minimal or recyclable packaging. This is very easy to do and can be done without much inconvenience. Just incorporate this awareness the next time you are shopping.

You should take a look at a week' s worth of your trash and use it to evaluate your output. First, asses how much is coming from typical sources like packaging, food waste and paper. You can even keep track of this waste in separate bins, such as food scraps in one and paper in another. By sorting it will make it easier to see which generates the biggest volume of trash.

If you are not currently recycling or composting, you should make a list of all the items in your trash that can be recycled or composted. Just think of how much this would reduce your weekly trash by. Next, you should take a look at what's left, the unrecyclable items. This category is a great place to start reducing by purchasing items with less packaging or by not purchasing the item in the first place.

You should prioritize your strategies and tackle the biggest unrecyclable source of waste first. And remember you don't have to reduce all your waste at once. By taking small, easy steps you will be able to get yourself started on a sustainable path.
