Six Flags Theme Parks announced some sweeping green initiatives for their parks. What makes this so interesting is the timing. Six Flags just recently announced that it has filed for bankruptcy and now they announce this huge green movement. Are they truly trying to be green or is this actually just another sign that going green can really save companies money.
Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, had his new stadium built in the hopes that it would be the first NFL stadium to gain recognition in the EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track Program. Of course, he also mentioned that savings over a long period of time was great incentive to do so. Now, Six Flags makes this announcement. Let's take a look at some of the green changes.
1. All vehicles and trains that currently run on diesel fuel will be switched over to run on used vegetable oil generated in the food courts of the company's theme parks.
2. Six Flags theme parks are also switching over to LED lamps and lighting as a way to cut energy use.
3. The company is ramping up its recycling efforts as well; in addition boosting paper recycling programs, Six Flags has partnered with Coca-Cola to add more than 3,000 recycle bins in the amusement parks
4. Water-saving efforts at Six Flags parks include the addition of low-flow water fixtures and plants and ground cover on park grounds that reduce the need for watering.
5. Six Flags is exploring the possibility of installing solar energy facilities on land surrounding some parks to power the roller coasters, rides, and buildings.
It is highly likely that Six Flags will become a much leaner and more productive business as it emerges from bankruptcy but a huge amount of that efficiency will come from the savings of these changes. Way to go Six Flags!
