Going Green Going Green Going Green

Why would I make a headline "Going Green Going Green Going Green?" Going green is simple, right? Yes and no. Let me explain.

The Earth has a layer wrapped around it. It is called the atmosphere. As the sun shines down on it, the atmosphere allows some of the heat down to the surface and then prevents too much of it from escaping. The atmosphere keeps a perfect balance to allow us to sustain life.

As we participate in some of our activities, gases are produced. This has happened since the beginning of time but the fact that we are using more and more gases than ever before, the Earth's atmosphere is changing. The changes to the atmosphere means that some of the gases that are produced are causing the Earth to heat up more than it should to keep that balance that sustains life.

Some scientists believe that the Earth's average temperature could rise around 4 to 7 degrees over the next 50 years. If that happens, much of the ice around the North and South Poles would melt and sea levels would rise. Some places would become too hot to sustain life and much of what farmer's grow now would not be grown.

Can you imagine a life where much of New York City would be under water or the nation's Capitol would resemble Venice?

Much of the gases produced in our atmosphere are soaked up by the ocean's tiny organisms and by trees, but that is where the problem lies. Those tiny organisms in the ocean actually soak up more of the gases when the water is colder. If the water continues to heat up, the organisms lose the ability to soak up more of the gases we are producing. Trees are being cut down in the Earth's rainforests at an alarming rate. Less trees mean less absorption of the harmful gases which just creates a vicous cycle of the greenhouse effect that is damaging our world.

What can we do? Simple really! Cut down on the energy you use. Everytime you open your refrigerator, turn on your lights, run the faucet, drive your car, etc. you produce energy that release these gases. If every person simply cut down just a little on the energy they use, our planet could breathe a little easier and future generations would not have to suffer the consequences of our poor choices.
